How Often Should You

How Often Should You Get a Dental Cleaning?

Team General Dentistry

How well you maintain your oral health will impact your overall health. And, much like your routine physical with your family physician, you should also be doing routine maintenance on your teeth and gums.

Plan on having a professional dental cleaning at least every six (6) months as this will give you the best opportunity to boost your oral health. Be sure to take the time to understand the importance of keeping your mouth free and clear from buildup.

What to Expect at a Dental Cleaning

While there may be some variations, almost all dental cleanings are quite similar. Sometimes the appointment will include taking x-rays or screening for oral cancer, but they will also include the actual cleaning and dental examination, too.

A dental hygienist will begin by using an ultrasonic device that emits vibrations and is cooled by water. This loosens large pieces of tartar making it easier to remove them during the cleaning. Then, using special tools, the primary focus will be on removing smaller pieces of any tartar or plaque buildup that is found on or around the teeth.

Next up is polishing your teeth. This involves the use of a rotating head and a special dental paste, carefully going over each tooth. This not only makes the teeth look beautiful, but the sleek surface makes it a little more difficult for bacteria and debris to latch on.

Flossing is another step in a dental cleaning, being careful to get deep between each one of your teeth. Regardless of how well you brush and floss at home, there are often missed nooks and crannies where this buildup can occur.

Rinsing and spitting is often the last step. This removes any debris left in your mouth so that you can feel fresh and clean.

Don’t be surprised if your dentist stops in for an oral examination once your cleaning is complete.

Why You Need a Dental Cleaning Every 6 Months

Simply put, with every dental cleaning, you are removing any buildup that is present on your teeth. By doing this every six months, tartar and plaque don’t stand a chance. You are not giving it much time to eat its way through your tooth’s enamel so that tooth decay can flourish inside.

Not only will it keep your teeth free and clear, but it will also give you some additional perks, such as:

  • Getting rid of bad breath
  • Saving yourself from complex dental issues later on - as well as the costs that come with them
  • Removing stains and discolorations - and brightening your smile
  • Improving oral health
  • Enhancing your appearance

By investing in yourself now with routine dental cleanings, you are setting the foundation for your future oral health.
