Dental Implant and Crown: Is This Combination Right for You?

Scott Dental Implants

Archeological records show that early dental implants were in use in prehistoric times. Modern dental implants were invented in Sweden in the 1960s, and they became extremely popular starting in the 1990s. Today, dental implants are considered the treatment of choice for replacing missing or failing teeth. There are many different implant-based solutions, but for many people, a single dental implant and crown is the right choice. Here is what you should know.

What Is a Dental Implant and Crown?

A dental implant topped by a crown can replace a single missing tooth. If you are missing multiple teeth, you might choose an implant-supported bridge or denture, although multiple dental implant and crown combinations are also possible.

After extracting the failing tooth, we will create an incision in your gum tissue and then use a series of drills to make a small hole in your jawbone. We will insert a tiny sliver of biocompatible titanium and allow it to fuse with the bone through the process of osseointegration.

We will then use an attachment known as an abutment to carefully attach a customized crown made from top-quality dental porcelain. This highly aesthetic restoration blends seamlessly with your natural teeth, restoring both the form and the function of your smile.

Advantages of Dental Implants

Dental implants have many advantages over other types of dental restorations. For example, dentures restore just a quarter of original bite strength and are prone to slipping and pinching. Dental implants restore more than 90 percent of bite strength and provide a stable base for the replacement tooth. Likewise, a traditional dental bridge requires us to sacrifice healthy tooth structure in the adjacent teeth, while an implant-supported bridge does not disturb the surrounding teeth.
